CHAPTER 18

The Sea Below

The settling northern night was an odd mixture of dusk and dawn with a cloudless sky shimmering beneath stars strong enough to be seen in the semi-light. In the distance, another pattern of shifting colors danced; these were not unlike the Northern Lights of Roth’s memory—the Aurora Borealis—yet different from what he had seen three thousand years earlier.

“How far are we from ... Iceland?” Timon asked as they waited for Noslen and Neleh.

Roth searched the sky for a point of reference. When he found it, he shrugged. “Without proper instruments, I can only guess. Perhaps two, maybe three days, if we were moving. It reminds of a time when I was training on a ship...”

Behind them, and hearing Roth and Timon talking on a personal level, Noslen stopped at the last step. He waited silently for several minutes until the two men stopped talking, and only then did he step onto the deck.

Both men turned to him, their eyebrows raised.

He shook his head. “I spoke to her and gave her ‘food for thought’, as you so often say to me, My Lord. Now we can only wait for her to act.”

Roth searched the face of his captain. “Thank you, Noslen.”

The warrior dipped his head slightly. “You know she will not give up.”

“I know this, and you know this, but it is Neleh who must come to this on her own.”

“Doubt her not, My Lord.” Noslen turned and walked to the bow, where he knelt and stared outward.

Below deck and alone, Neleh explored Areenna’s gifting. Before attempting to create the formula, as Areenna had instructed, she closed her eyes and visualized the boat floating on the sea. She pictured herself floating on the water, and immersed herself within the waves. She could feel the coldness of the water washing over her skin as the waves lifted her and lowered her like a giant hand bathing an infant. Slowly, carefully, she willed herself under the surface.

At the exact moment of her ‘push’, there was a shift, followed by a strange change to her consciousness as the crystal sea drew her into its depths. An instant later, she was a hundred feet beneath the boat, and in the space of two heartbeats, the gentle caress of the sea’s current grasped her and swept her away.

Turning her body, while knowing she was in the cabin of the boat, she allowed the sea to take control and move her where it would. Although this was different from the times she was joined with the humper, moving through the water was strangely familiar.

The sea teemed with life: vibrantly alive with small and large freesh, some iridescent and some plain. The reality in the differences between now and when she’d been joined with the humper were extremely evident, for she was part of the water, not separate from it. Now she understood the formula Areenna had given her. It becomes you; you become it.

The moment she connected with what was happening, she became part of the sea itself, and everything turned startlingly clear.
